Our 11-Day Thai Riviera Road Trip Itinerary: The Remarkable South From Bangkok to Patthalung

There’s an idealized version of coastal Thailand where sleepy fishing villages back onto broad, curved bays. The only sound: the gentle lapping of turquoise waters and the rustling needles of casuarina trees.  For miles on end, the only footprints are your own.

You’ll hear that the authentic Thailand vanished decades ago, swallowed up by resorts and beachside condo developments.  But let me assure you, it still exists. With the help of this itinerary, you can experience it too. This is exactly the route we took, the things we did, the food we ate, and the places we stayed.

Why the Thai Riviera?

Known as the “Royal Coast or, sometimes, the “Thai Riviera,” this unspoiled stretch of coast along the western side of the Gulf of Thailand must surely be the country’s best kept secret.

This stretch of coast, which includes Hua Hin, Pranburi, and Prachuap Khiri Khan as well as the more southerly towns of Chumphon and Nakhon Si Thammarat, is where families can still find that elusive, peaceful Thailand. We chose this route specifically for the promise of:

  • Real Wildlife, Not Tourist Parks: This itinerary takes you to Kui Buri National Park, one of the best places in Thailand to spot wild elephants in their natural habitat—a world away from staged elephant camps. The birdwatching opportunities in the marshes of Khao Sam Roi Yot is unparalleled.
  • Iconic Natural Beauty: From the towering Pha Daeng Red Cliffs in Chumphon to the cinematic fishing nets of Pak Pra, this route offers photogenic spots that few foreign tourists ever see.
  • Zero Crowds: With the exception of a few local weekenders, you will often have beaches like those near Khanom and the islands of Koh Talu almost entirely to yourselves.
  • The Perfect Road Trip: The highways are quiet, well-maintained, and the driving (once you’re out of Bangkok, anyway) is straightforward, making the journey an enjoyable part of the family adventure itself.

Logistics Overview: You Will Need a Car

Some links below are affiliate links. At no extra cost to you, we earn a small commission if you make a booking, which helps us keep our family on the road. Thank you for your support!

This entire 11-day adventure is only possible with your own vehicle. Public transit and transfers simply do not serve the unique national parks, homestays, and hidden beaches we visited.

Rental Car: We owned a car in Thailand, but if you’re not so lucky, we recommend you pick up and drop off our rental at your airport of arrival to maximize the driving time down South. If the prospect of driving in Bangkok makes you nervous, you can arrange transport to Hua Hin (about 2.5-3 hours away) and rent a car from there. After Hua Hin, the driving is very low stress.

Day 1: Pranburi Coastal Drive & Check-in

A wide, empty expanse of sandy beach on the Gulf of Thailand, showing forested limestone karsts in the distance and very few boats, illustrating the unspoiled Thai Riviera.

This day is dedicated to breaking out of Bangkok and beginning the scenic journey south. Not long after you make the turn south, you’ll start settling into the “Royal Coast” rhythm. While the drive is substantial (around 4 hours), we’re making an extra push to get south of Hua Hin. Pranburi is your introduction to the Riviera: broad beaches, quiet resorts, and a pace of life instantly slower than Bangkok. We highly recommend aiming to arrive mid-afternoon to enjoy a swim before dinner.

Day 1 Schedule: Pranburi

TimeActivity/Logistics
9:30 a.m.Depart Bangkok. The drive to Pranburi is 248 kms (around 4 hrs and 15 mins).
12:45 p.m.Lunch at OX Restaurant. A family favorite for fresh seafood and a great stop to break up the drive.
2:30 p.m.Check-in at Namaste Resort. Settle in, orientate yourself with your gracious hosts, then walk down to the beach.
6:00 p.m.On Saturdays, pick up food at the Long Lay Night Market and eat on the beach. Other days, Thai Thai Restaurant for local cuisine near the guesthouse,
8:00 p.m.We’d still be at the beach, having a Chang while the kids eat some Roti Sai Mai.

Accommodation: Namaste Resort, Pranburi

Day 2: Prachuap Khiri Khan – Wild Elephants and Kissing Caves

Bueng Bua Boardwalk stretching across the Thung Sam Roi Yot Freshwater Marsh, with jagged limestone mountains (karsts) of Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in the background.

Today we visit two of Thailand’s iconic national parks: Khao Sam Roi Yot and Kui Buri. We visited the Kissing Cave on this trip because we’d visited other, more popular sites at Sam Roi Yot before, and the timing worked well. If this is your first visit to the area, you may well want to visit the more iconic sites. I’ve included a couple of variations to give a sense of timing. The key is to ensure you leave time for the main event: spotting wild elephants at Kui Buri.

Day 2 Schedule: Sam Roi Yot and Kui Buri

TimeActivity/Logistics
9:00 a.m.Drive to Sam Roi Yot National Park (37 kms / 45 mins)
9:45 a.m.Arrive at the pier, hire a boat for the short trip through the marsh to see the Kissing Cave. You can substitute a trip to the Bueng Bua Boardwalk without materially changing the schedule.
12:45 p.m.Lunch at Khrua Nong On (ครัวน้องอร ) for solid Thai food. Located about 45 mins away from the Kissing Cave and 30 mins before Kui Butri.
2:30 p.m.Spotting Wild Elephants at Kui Buri. This is the prime time for viewing and your chances of success are very high. Full details in our Guide to Seeing the Wild Elephants of Kui Buri.
5:30 p.m.Drive to Rai Lung Tui Homestay (58 kms, 1 hour)
6:30 p.m.Dinner at Tao Daeng Pizza on the Prachuap Khiri Khan boardwalk. Family-run, wood-fired pizzeria.

This schedule is something anyone with a car can easily arrange, and as we detail in on guide, you don’t need to hire a guide. Sometimes, though, the hands-off approach just makes sense. In that case, we recommend this tour:

A child peering through large binoculars from the safari truck, looking out over the landscape during a wild elephant safari at Kui Buri National Park, Thailand.

Day 2 Alternative: Phraya Nakhon Cave

Inside Phraya Nakhon Cave, the Khuha Kharuehat Royal Pavilion sits centered on the floor of the massive, jungle-filled doline chamber beneath the skylight.

Very doable, but a slightly more tiring day. Plan for an earlier start to ensure you have time to cool down at Laem Sala Beach and aren’t otherwise rushed. For more details, read about our experience of The Phraya Nakhon Cave Hike.

TimeActivity/Logistics
8:00 a.m.Drive to Bang Pu Village (11 kms / 15 mins).
8:30 a.m.Boat trip to Laem Sala Beach Take the boat to save time and energy for the cave hike (THB 400 roundtrip/boat).
8:45 a.m.Hike to Phraya Nakhon Cave. The hike is steep, but short at no more than 30-45 mins.
11:00 a.m.Having enjoyed the best light of the day, hike back down to Laem Sala Beach and relax before taking the boat back to Bang Pu.
12:00 p.m.Lunch at Bangpu Family Restaurant (ร้านอาหาร ณ บางปู), fresh seafood on the riverside right near the park exit.
1:15 p.m.Drive to Kui Buri National Park (62 kms / 1 hr 15 mins)
2:30 p.m.Spotting Wild Elephants at Kui Buri. This is the prime time for viewing and your chances of success are very high. Full details in our Guide to Seeing the Wild Elephants of Kui Buri. Resume above schedule.

Accommodation: Rai Lung Tui Homestay, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Day 3: Prachuap Khiri Khan – Beaches, Temples & Local Culture

A family standing at the summit of Wat Khao Chong Krachok overlooking Ao Prachuap, each holding a long wooden stick for defense against the macaque monkeys.

Today is a chance to take a break from the long drives and enjoy the lovely Prachuap Khiri Khan. Schedule is less important today, as everything is close and you can mix and match as best suits you. I’ve included the three activities we’ve most enjoyed in the area.

Day 3 Schedule: Charms of Prachuap Khiri Khan

TimeActivity/Logistics
8:30 a.m.Walk up Wat Khao Chong Krachok  Climb the 396 steps to the hilltop temple for a panoramic view of sunrise over Prachuap’s three bays.
10:00 a.m.Swim at Ao Manao Beach, a beautiful, protected bay within a Thai Air Force base. Free entry, shallow, calm waters, and perfect for families. Check the tides for best swimming.
12:30 p.m.Lunch at the Ao Manao beach stalls. Nothing much distinguishes these beachside kitchens from each other, but they are very convenient. Bringing a picnic also works well.
4:00 p.m.Visit the Cave of the Reclining Buddha  A short detour to see two reclining Buddhas inside a peaceful cave near Wat Ao Noi.
6:30 p.m.Dinner at Papyllote. French cuisine in a garden setting. There’s even pétanque.

Accommodation: Rai Lung Tui Homestay, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Day 4: Koh Talu – Temple Climb, Island Transfer & Squid Fishing

A wooden pier with a small thatched hut extends into a calm, shallow turquoise bay on Koh Talu Island, with a white sand beach and dense green jungle shoreline visible in the distance.

Today takes you off the mainland to a private island experience. Because the drive is relatively short, we planned a stop at an impressive hilltop temple before catching the resort’s speedboat. The stay at Koh Talu Island Resort is all-inclusive, covering meals, snorkeling, and the evening squid fishing we enjoyed.

Read about our time on Koh Talu here: Trading the Road for Island Time

Day 4 Schedule: Koh Talu

TimeActivity/Logistics
6:30 a.m.Breakfast at Rai Lung Tui Homestay, which provides a well-stocked self-catering kitchen ideal for early departures.
7:00 a.m.Drive south towards the Koh Talu Pier, with the temple stop coming about 72 kms (1 hour) into the drive.
8:00 a.m.Climb up to Phra Mahathat Chedi Phakdee Prakat An incredibly ornate hilltop Chedi. Allow about 1 hour for the walk and visit.
9:00 a.m.Continue south to the Koh Talu Pier, now only 34 kms (45 mins) away.
9:50 a.m.Catch the resort’s speedboat for the short trip across the water.
10:30 a.m.You’re theirs now, surrender to island life. Meals are at set times, meanwhile swim, snorkel, and nap in the shade of palms and mangrove.
3:30 p.m.Check the schedule, but around this time, the floating pier will take prospective squid fisherfolk out into the bay to try their luck,

Day 7: Nakhon Si Thammarat (Khanom) – Back to the Coast

Woman wading in clear, calm turquoise water on a secluded beach with mountains in the background at Khanom, Thailand.

Today is the longest drive of the trip (so far), as you head from Chumphon deep into the Southern Thai Riviera, landing in the peaceful coastal area of Khanom in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The reward is checking into a beautiful resort right on the beach, with time to relax and recover before tomorrow’s unique hunt for the famous pink dolphins.

Family swimming in the cool water at the base of the multi-tiered Ton Pliw waterfall near Kachong Hills Tented Resort in Trang.

Today involves a scenic drive from the mountains of Trang back up to the coast of Chumphon. To break up the miles, we’ve planned a refreshingly cool stop at a waterfall in Phatthalung before checking into a special coastal homestay. Alternatively, you could go right past Chumphon and spend another nightie Ban Krut.

Day 10 Schedule: Returning North

9:30 a.m.Drive to Sam Ha Chet Waterfall (180 kms / 2 hrs 45 mins)
